Listed below are a few of the different types of dentures that are available at any of our offices located in The Villages, Fl.
What are Dentures?
Dentures are a substitute or replacement for missing teeth and tend to be more affordable than traditional crowns, bridgework or dental implants.
Dentures are a set of teeth which can easily be taken in and out of your mouth. They cosmetically enhance your smile as well as improve your chewing functionality. The dentist may recommend to the patient a full denture or a partial denture depending on the individual’s needs, mouth structure, and any other contributing factors.
Because of the many improvements and advancements in dentistry, dentures are now more comfortable and fit more securely than dentures in the past. Not only that, dentures today look and feel like real teeth!
Full dentures are usually applied when all or almost all of the natural teeth are missing. If there are any teeth remaining, they are removed and a full denture is fitted and specially made for that patient.
Partial Dentures are dentures that replace anything that is less than a full set of teeth and are more affordable than full dentures since there is less work and material involved.
Conventional Full Dentures
Conventional full dentures are needed when every one of the teeth are removed from the mouth. The gum tissue is then given ample time to heal and recover prior to dentures being placed. It may take up to 12 weeks for the gum tissue to totally heal. During this period the patient would be without any teeth. This is not the most ideal situation and we do not recommend someone going that long without teeth. A better solution is an “Immediate Full Denture”.
Immediate Full Dentures
Immediate full dentures are a better alternative. Before having the teeth removed, the dentist and our staff will take measurements of the patient’s mouth which will allow us to have the dentures made before removing any of the teeth. Once the teeth are removed the new dentures will be immediately placed in the patient’s mouth. The great benefit of choosing this option is that the patient does not have to go without teeth. However, they will need to have follow up visits in order to refit the dentures as the gum tissue and jaw bone heal and recover. After the jaw bone has healed, the dentures are then relined for a better fit. This process of healing can take up to 3 months.
Generally speaking, dentures are not as comfortable as a fixed bridge or even a dental implant. They also may cover taste buds located on the roof of the mouth which will likely result in a reduced sense of taste.
Because of today’s advancements in dentistry, dentures can be secured by using dental implants which allow for a more comfortable fitting as well as eliminate the fear of having the dentures popping out of someone’s mouth.
